Nigeria’s U20 team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations after a 3-1 penalty shootout win over Senegal, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Suez Canal Stadium.

The closely contested quarter-final saw both sides fail to score despite numerous chances, with Nigeria maintaining composure in the shootout. Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma all converted their penalties, while goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt made a vital save to give Nigeria the edge. Senegal struggled from the spot, with two saves and one attempt hitting the crossbar. Only Seydi Diouck successfully converted his penalty. The result secured Nigeria’s eighth straight quarter-final win in the competition’s current format.

The match, while goalless in regulation, featured plenty of action. Nigeria’s Kparobo Arierhi and Divine Oliseh challenged Senegal keeper Mouhamed Sissokho, while Senegal’s Cheikh Thiam hit the post with a header. Fatigue set in during extra time, but both teams pressed on, with Tahir Maigana and Israel Ayuma coming close for Nigeria. Senegal’s exit marks their first knockout loss in the U20 AFCON since 2017. Nigeria now shift focus to the semi-finals, aiming for their eighth continental title.
