Nigerian referee Yemisi Eunice Akintoye has been selected as one of the 18 officials appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate at the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2025. A member of the Lagos State Football Referees Council, Akintoye earned her place after excelling at the WAFCON preparatory course held earlier in June in Cairo, Egypt. The course included rigorous technical assessments, physical fitness tests, and decision-making evaluations designed to simulate match conditions.
Her appointment marks a major milestone in her officiating career, placing her among Africa’s top female referees. She joins an elite group that includes internationally recognized officials such as Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga. Akintoye, who became a FIFA-badged referee in 2021, has officiated at notable competitions including the WAFU Women’s Champions League and the CAF Women’s Champions League. With WAFCON 2025 set to feature Africa’s top women’s national teams, Akintoye’s selection underscores Nigeria’s growing stature in producing elite-level female referees.
