The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.The Ogun State Government confirmed his death in a statement issued by Governor Dapo Abiodun. The monarch died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, marking the end of a royal era that began in 1960.Governor Abiodun noted that Oba Adetona’s reign brought unprecedented growth to Ijebuland, making it a model for infrastructure and community development in Ogun State.

He credited the monarch for elevating the Ojude Oba festival to international recognition and for fostering economic, educational, and healthcare improvements across the region.“It is indeed double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors the same day that the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, died in a hospital in London,” the governor added.

In his tribute, Abiodun described the monarch as a unifying figure and a champion of cultural heritage and progressive development. He praised Oba Adetona’s lifelong dedication to public service and his lasting contributions to both Ogun State and Nigeria.

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona ascended the throne over six decades ago, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs. His reign is widely regarded as transformative, marked by modernisation, peacebuilding, and active civic engagement. As Ijebuland and the wider Nigerian community mourn, tributes continue to pour in from across the country celebrating the life and legacy of the revered royal father.
