Beginning Sunday, June 8, 2025, Nigerians will face higher costs for obtaining driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates following new rates approved by the Joint Tax Board (JTB). The revised fees, which will apply nationwide, reflect the introduction of enhanced security features and rising production expenses. In a public announcement made in May 2025, the JTB explained that the fee adjustments are necessary due to added security enhancements on number plates and licenses, along with other incidental production costs. The board has directed all relevant government agencies and vehicle licensing authorities to implement the updated charges.

Under the new pricing, a standard motor vehicle driver’s license will cost N15,000 for three years and N21,000 for five years. For tricycle operators, the three-year license will be N7,000, and the five-year license will be N11,000. Number plates have also seen notable increases. Private and commercial vehicle plates will now cost N30,000, articulated vehicle plates N90,000, and dealer vehicle plates N100,000. Out-of-season plates will be issued at N150,000, while fancy number plates now attract a fee of N400,000. Government standard vehicle plates are priced at N80,000, and government fancy plates at N120,000. Motorcycle number plates will cost N12,000 for standard and N50,000 for fancy versions. Government motorcycle plates are set at N20,000 for standard and N50,000 for fancy.

This is not the first time such a price increase has occurred. In March 2021, the JTB approved similar hikes following a meeting in Kaduna. At that time, standard private and commercial plates rose from N12,500 to N18,750, while fancy plates doubled from N80,000 to N200,000. Motorcycle number plates increased from N3,000 to N5,000, and driver’s licenses went up from N6,000 to N10,000 for three years and from N10,000 to N15,000 for five years. Like the 2025 revision, the 2021 increases were attributed to higher production costs and the incorporation of advanced security features.
