
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru on Friday honoured Blessing Ejiofor, a member of Nigeria’s D’Tigress basketball team, with a state award, ₦30 million, and a duplex at the Civil and Public Servant Estate. The recognition was announced during a reception in her honour at the EXCO Chambers, Government House, Abakaliki. Nwifuru also approved ₦50 million for the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike, to construct a standard basketball court to train upcoming players ahead of future seasons.
The governor praised Ejiofor as a “great ambassador” and inducted her into the Ebonyi Hall of Fame.Ejiofor, a centre player with an outstanding international career, was instrumental in D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship win. She developed her game at Vanderbilt University, Chipola College, and West Virginia University—where she earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honours—before playing professionally in Spain and France. She also represented Nigeria at the 2024 Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament in Paris.
