Tomeka Thiam, wife of global music star Akon, has filed for divorce after nearly 29 years of marriage. Court records submitted on September 11, 2025, in Fulton County, Georgia, cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The couple, who share a daughter, were preparing to mark their 29th wedding anniversary. Thiam is seeking joint legal custody with primary physical custody, visitation rights for Akon, and spousal support. She rejected Akon’s request for support.

Neither party has issued a statement regarding the development. In a 2022 interview on The Zeze Mills Show, Akon described polygamy as a natural part of his cultural heritage, stressing that it aligns with African traditions.

He is father to nine children and has spoken about balancing family life with his career, noting that his main responsibility is providing financially. He explained that while his work often prevents him from attending family events, technology enables him to stay connected through video calls and other means.
