The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a total and indefinite nationwide strike set to begin at 12 a.m. on Tuesday, following the Federal Government’s decision to halt the implementation of the Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
The association described the move to discontinue the PAT as unfortunate and unacceptable, stressing that it undermines the welfare of its members. NARD stated that the decision to embark on a comprehensive strike was reached after extensive deliberations, adding that the action would continue until its demands are fully addressed. Among its key demands is the immediate reversal of the decision to stop the PAT from April 2026.
The association also called for the prompt payment of promotion arrears and outstanding salaries owed to doctors in various centres across the country. In addition, it demanded the swift completion of the process for disbursing the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF). NARD further insisted on the immediate payment of the outstanding 19 months’ arrears related to the Professional Allowance under the PAT.
According to a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Shuaibu Ibrahim, the decision followed an extraordinary virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on April 4, 2026. The NEC urged members nationwide to remain united and committed to the industrial action until their demands are met, emphasizing the need to collectively push for a fair resolution.
