The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has banned the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockout explosives, and other unauthorized pyrotechnics ahead of and during the Christmas celebrations. According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the decision follows growing concern over the increasing circulation of these items across Abuja.
Adeh said firecrackers pose serious safety hazards, including injuries, fire outbreaks, and widespread panic. She added that they create opportunities for criminal elements to conceal unlawful activities. Beyond these risks, their indiscriminate use disrupts public peace and endangers vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with underlying health conditions.
Residents were advised to comply with the advisory. Adeh said FCT police operatives have been directed to enforce the ban and ensure violators are arrested and prosecuted. She urged the public to remain vigilant and report anyone involved in the sale or use of firecrackers. Reports can be made at the nearest police station or through the FCT Police Command emergency lines: 08032003913, 08068587311.
