The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has strongly condemned the killing of Superintendent of Police (SP) Halliru Liman by a military personnel at a checkpoint in Kebbi State, labeling the incident as both “alarming and unacceptable.”
In a statement released by the Zamfara State Police Command, the alleged shooter was identified as Hassan, a soldier assigned to OPHD Sector 6 in the Dan Marke area of Bukkuyum, Zamfara State.
Despite SP Liman identifying himself as a police officer, Hassan reportedly shot him in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
The tragic incident took place on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, around 10:30 a.m., as SP Liman, who served as the Divisional Police Officer of Wusagu Division in Kebbi State, was on his way to a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi.
The police statement detailed that SP Liman was stopped by military personnel at a checkpoint, where he duly identified himself. However, this did not prevent the fatal shooting.
“We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the senseless killing of SP Halliru Liman,” the statement read. “The circumstances surrounding this heinous crime are alarming and unacceptable. SP Liman was brutally murdered by military personnel despite identifying himself as a police officer.”
The NPF condemned the unprovoked attack in the strongest terms, demanding a thorough investigation into the incident. The statement emphasized that the actions of the military personnel involved were a blatant violation of the rules of engagement and the principles of inter-agency cooperation.
“We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this egregious incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The police and military must work together to maintain peace and security, not engage in violent confrontations that undermine public trust.”
The Nigeria Police Force extended its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman, vowing to pursue justice for the fallen officer.
