Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has disclosed that North Korean forces have engaged in combat with Ukrainian troops in Russia’s Kursk region, resulting in loss of life.
Zelensky revealed that approximately 11,000 North Korean soldiers are stationed in the region, where Ukraine’s three-month military advance into Russian territory has stalled.
“Eleven thousand North Korean soldiers or soldiers of the North Korean army are currently present on the territory of the Russian Federation in the border with Ukraine on the north of our country in the Kursk region,
” Zelensky told reporters at the European Political Community summit in Budapest, Hungary, on Thursday. Some of these troops have already taken part in hostilities against the Ukrainian military. Yes, there are already losses, this is a fact.”
“However, he did not provide details on which side suffered casualties. Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that several North Korean troops were killed in a skirmish with Russian and Ukrainian forces, citing high-ranking US and Ukrainian officials.”
The deployment of North Korean troops to Russia has sparked intense scrutiny as the US and its allies ponder a response to the deepening military alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang.
