Gunmen enforcing the outlawed sit-at-home order have wreaked havoc on communities in Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, leaving at least five people dead.
The attacks occurred between 8am and 10am in Abatete, Abagana, and Ukpo, with the casualties mainly being members of the Anambra Vigilante services. The first attack happened in Abatete town, targeting vigilant personnel attached to the town’s President-General (PG), resulting in the deaths of three security men.
In separate incidents, the gunmen attacked Abagana and Ukpo communities, killing one Vigilante Group member and a motorcycle rider at the Ukpo roundabout. The attacks have sent terrified members of communities around Anambra Central into panic, with a voice note circulating on social media warning people in Awka not to venture outside. Community members have expressed shock and sadness over the senseless violence, with one member stating, “We are praying for the recovery of our PG. This senseless violence has left our community shaken”.
Another community member described the scene as “chaos,” with attackers shooting indiscriminately and shouting “no Biafra, no freedom”. The police authorities in the state have confirmed that operatives are currently at the scene, with the spokesperson stating that details are still sketchy.
