President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe as Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), reinforcing his administration’s commitment to healthcare reform. According to a statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Oloriegbe’s appointment—effective March 11, 2025—is for an initial term of four years.

His selection highlights the President’s focus on strengthening the nation’s healthcare system through experienced leadership. A seasoned medical professional, Oloriegbe brings a wealth of expertise in healthcare and legislative affairs. As a former Senator representing Kwara Central in the 9th Senate, he chaired the Senate Committee on Health and led the Joint National Assembly Committee on Health, playing a pivotal role in shaping key health policies and legislative initiatives.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and furthered his education with a Master’s in Coaching and Consultation from the University of Oxford, UK, and HEC Paris. Oloriegbe is also a distinguished member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN), and the International AIDS Society (IAS).

His appointment is expected to provide strategic direction to the NHIA, driving the effective implementation of health insurance policies aimed at expanding coverage and improving access to healthcare services across Nigeria.
