The National Opposition Coalition Group, headed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has submitted an application to the Independent National Electoral Commission seeking registration for a new political party named the All Democratic Alliance.
The application, dated June 19 and acknowledged by INEC on Friday, signals the coalition’s intent to form a new political platform rather than merge with any existing party.
Supported by other notable figures including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats and a former aide to President Olusegun Obasanjo, the party aims to leverage growing public dissatisfaction and political shifts to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election.
This move follows a recent reminder from INEC that political group registrations must strictly adhere to constitutional and electoral requirements, warning that no public or political pressure would influence the process. With this formal submission, the coalition has ended speculation about whether it would reactivate a dormant party or start a new one.
A copy of the application letter obtained in Abuja was signed by Chief Akin A. Rickets, the group’s Protem National Chairman, and Abdullahi Elayo, the Protem National Secretary. It reads in part: “We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, as a political party.“This is a sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.
“The name of the party shall be All Democratic Alliance with ADA as our acronym and ‘Justice for All’ as our slogan.”
The submission included the proposed party’s constitution, manifesto, logo, and minutes from its foundational meetings. The party’s symbol features a maize cob, intended to represent abundance, resilience, and sustenance—values the group plans to emphasize. The letter added that the attached manifesto outlines the party’s ideology, while the constitution defines its structure and legal framework.
