Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has renamed The Polytechnic, Ibadan to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic in honour of the late former governor, Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo.
Olunloyo, who passed away on April 6 this year, was the pioneer Principal of the institution. The announcement was made during a state interdenominational service held yesterday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan. Despite heavy rain, residents and indigenes turned out in large numbers to pay tribute.
Makinde described Olunloyo as a man of deep conviction who lived an eventful life as a scholar, statesman, technocrat, and cultural advocate. The governor noted that although Olunloyo’s time in office in 1983 was brief, his electoral victory over a popular incumbent reflected the public’s strong trust in him.
“I talked about preserving and digitising his library yesterday as a mark of honour to Baba Olunloyo. Today, we will be giving Baba another honour to immortalise him. He was the first Principal of The Polytechnic, Ibadan; that institution will now be named Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan,” Makinde said.
Earlier in the service, retired Methodist Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu hailed Olunloyo as a role model known for his integrity and exemplary leadership. Notable attendees at the event included the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal; Chief (Mrs) Dupe Jemibewon; Chief (Mrs) Mutiat Ladoja; Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; former Deputy Governor Hazeem Gbolarumi; Rep. Abass Adigun Agboworin; Chief of Staff Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; Exco Members; Dr Saka Balogun; Sikiru Sanda; CCII President-General Adeniyi Ajewole; religious leaders, and family members.
