The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Command, has announced a restriction of movement across the state on Saturday, July 12, due to the conduct of local government elections. According to the command, the restriction will be in effect from 3 am to 3 pm on that day.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the police noted that there would be a “total restriction of vehicular movement throughout Lagos State” during the election period. However, certain categories of individuals are exempt from the restriction, though the statement did not specify who they are. Meanwhile, the Lagos State chapter of the African Action Congress (AAC) has raised concerns about the preparedness and credibility of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) ahead of the polls.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the AAC State Secretary, Jegede Kehinde, accused LASIEC of undermining democratic processes, disenfranchising candidates, and failing to ensure transparency and inclusivity in the build-up to the election.

Kehinde criticised the leadership of LASIEC, stating, “Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission must have known that the local government election is not a joke, as we are seriously looking for a government that will be impacted positively by people at the grassroots.” He further alleged that the LASIEC chairman was operating with undue control and partisan interests.
