Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has increased the salaries of 67 security guards at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital from N18,800 to N80,000 after their emotional appeal during his visit to the facility.
During an interactive session, one of the guards spoke about their struggles, welfare challenges, and the difficulty of providing for families on such a low income. He explained that despite serving for years, they were not hospital staff but indigenes of Oyo State working under an outsourcing arrangement. The guard, in tears, pleaded for the governor’s intervention, noting that age was catching up with him while he still had responsibilities to his family.
After learning that they earned N18,800 monthly while the outsourcing company received N27,000 per guard, Makinde announced that all 67 security guards would be converted to ad-hoc workers. He further approved a new monthly salary of N80,000 for each of them, effective from October. “I can solve the problem right away by saying that all 67 should be converted directly to ad-hoc workers, and you will get N80,000 every month from the first of October,” Makinde declared.
