A Special Adviser to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sunusi Kwankwaso, has stepped down from his position following the governor’s resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).The resignation was made public in a video shared on Friday by Sunusi’s media aide, Saifullahi Alhassan, on Facebook. In the video, Sunusi said his decision was based on reports that Governor Yusuf had left the NNPP and was expected to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), allegedly aligned with the Ganduje faction.

He explained that he had previously submitted a resignation letter but was unable to get it officially acknowledged. According to him, “After we received information that the governor had exited the NNPP and there were expectations he would join the APC, I submitted my resignation letter, but it was not accepted.”

Sunusi said the video was intended to serve as a formal and public announcement of his resignation as a political adviser.“I also forwarded the letter to the office of the Secretary to the State Government, but it was rejected,” he added. “I am making this video to publicly inform everyone that I have resigned my position as a political adviser. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and for the work we accomplished together over the past two years.”He ruled out joining the APC, restating his loyalty to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya political movement.

“I will not betray Kwankwaso or the Kwankwasiyya movement. I remain loyal to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and I will not join the APC,” he said. The resignation comes amid rising political tension in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP, a development that has led to a wave of resignations and political realignments among party officials and government aides. Kwankwaso is regarded as one of the leading figures within the NNPP who is expected to remain aligned with the party’s national leadership.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that Governor Yusuf resigned from the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen across the state. The development was confirmed in a statement released on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa. In a letter addressed to the chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, Governor Yusuf formally communicated his decision to leave the party, with effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.
