Ugo Ugochukwu has won the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy following a campaign built on consistency, securing the title with four victories from 15 races and finishing 15 points ahead of Audi-backed Freddie Slater. The Nigerian-born American driver set the tone early in the season with successive wins at Hampton Downs, a strong start that proved crucial as the championship progressed. He stood on the podium at every round and finished outside the top 10 only twice throughout the campaign.

Reacting after the New Zealand Grand Prix, Ugochukwu described the relief of sealing the title, saying it was an “amazing feeling” to cross the line and complete the championship. He added that the race felt unusually long and praised his team for their efforts across the season, noting that their work made the achievement especially rewarding. He also pointed to the importance of his early momentum, explaining that the results at Hampton Downs gave him a valuable advantage that he was able to build on. According to him, the final race was about scoring the necessary points and seeing the job through.

The championship battle almost slipped away at the final round in New Zealand after a suspension issue forced him into the pits late in qualifying. Although M2 Competition repaired the car in time for him to continue, a technical infringement related to the suspension led to the 18-year-old being dropped to 13th on the grid for the feature race. Ugochukwu admitted the weekend was challenging, citing misfortune in the opening qualifying session and his disappointment at missing the chance to fight for victory at the New Zealand Grand Prix. However, he said he refocused on the bigger picture and prioritised securing the championship.

The Oceania series was his first major campaign since parting ways with McLaren following changes to its junior driver programme. With the title secured, Ugochukwu will now turn his attention to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he is set to begin his second season with Campos Racing. After placing 16th overall last year with Prema, including two podium finishes, his 2026 Formula 3 campaign will get underway from March 6 to 8 at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
