A retired Nigerian Army general who was abducted by gunmen in north-west Nigeria has died while in captivity, according to the military.Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former military spokesperson who served between 2015 and 2017, was kidnapped alongside his wife while travelling through Katsina State on May 30. His death has drawn renewed attention to the persistent insecurity affecting parts of north-west Nigeria, where armed criminal groups commonly known as bandits frequently carry out kidnappings, cattle rustling and attacks on communities.

Reports indicated that Abubakar was travelling to attend a wedding when gunmen intercepted his vehicle and abducted him, his wife and their driver. Days before confirmation of his death, a video circulating on social media appeared to show the retired officer in captivity with an injury to his left leg alongside other hostages. The military said it had refrained from making public statements about the abduction while security agencies were working to secure the release of those held captive. It noted that extensive efforts had been deployed in hopes of ensuring his safe return.

The whereabouts and condition of Abubakar’s wife remain unclear, although military authorities said operations to track down the perpetrators and dismantle criminal networks responsible for such attacks have been intensified. Paying tribute to the late officer, the military described his death as a tragic loss and extended condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues. It also highlighted his contributions to counter-insurgency operations and praised his dedication to national service and the unity of Nigeria. Abubakar, who was reportedly 61 years old, is remembered for his years of service in the armed forces and his role in communicating military operations during a critical period in the country’s security challenges.
