Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed that presidential candidate Peter Obi entered into two formal pacts committing to serve a single four-year term if victorious in 2027. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso detailed that the commitments consist of an official party document alongside a personal agreement executed between the two leaders. The former Kano State governor stated that under the terms of the agreement, executive power is slated to return to Northern Nigeria in 2031 following a single four-year term under Obi.
Kwankwaso expressed complete faith in Obi’s intention to uphold the commitment, characterizing their professional relationship as built on mutual trust and a shared vision for national development. He noted that following the completion of the 2027–2031 administration, both politicians intend to continue collaborating within the party. Kwankwaso made clear that the rotation agreement applies broadly to the northern region rather than signaling a personal bid for the top office in 2031. While the terms of the documents have not been made available to the public or independently verified, the single-term commitment appears to have resolved earlier negotiations that previously stalled prior to the 2023 elections.
After subsequent attempts to form a broader coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) faced internal friction, both leaders formally registered with the NDC in May. Kwankwaso subsequently supported zoning the presidential nomination to the South, paving the way for Obi’s selection as candidate and his own nomination as running mate.Addressing criticism from political figures like former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, Kwankwaso rejected assertions that northern voters would not support the ticket. He pointed to Obi’s receipt of over two million northern votes in the 2023 election as evidence of an established voter base. The NDC campaign relies heavily on combining Obi’s strong appeal among youth and southern electorates with Kwankwaso’s established political network across the North.
