Parton, whose death at the age of 80 was announced on Tuesday by her nephew and longtime head of security, Bryan Seever, had been married to Carl Dean for nearly 59 years. Dean died in March 2025 at the age of 82, just over a year before Parton’s death.

Seever said Parton had asked him years earlier to make the announcement when the time came.

“This video announcement is something Dolly asked me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Seever said. “I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now. It is an honor. An honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us not with Dolly.”

Parton had previously spoken openly about why she and Dean never became parents, explaining that her career and constant travel played a major role in how she viewed motherhood.

“I haven’t missed it like I thought I might,” she said. “When you’re a young couple, you think you’re going to have kids, but it just wasn’t one of those burning things for me. I had my career and my music and I was traveling. If I’d had kids, I’d have stayed home with them, I’m sure, and worried myself to death about them.”

Parton also faced health challenges that affected her ability to have children. She was diagnosed with endometriosis and underwent a partial hysterectomy in her 30s.

Rather than viewing her circumstances solely as a loss, Parton said she believed they gave her an opportunity to devote herself to children through philanthropy and other forms of support.

“I didn’t have children because I believed that God didn’t mean for me to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine,” she said in a 2020 episode of “The Oprah Conversation.”

She pointed to her work with children as one example of how she believed her life took a different but meaningful direction.

“[Without kids of my own,] I could do things like Imagination Library,” Parton continued, referencing her nonprofit that mails free books to school-aged children. “If I hadn’t had the freedom to work, I wouldn’t have done all the things I’ve done. I wouldn’t be in a position to do all of the things I’m doing now.”

Parton established the Dollywood Foundation in 1986 to support educational opportunities and help reduce high-school dropout rates. The foundation’s Imagination Library programme, created in honour of her father, provides books to children, while her wider philanthropic work extended to causes including literacy, healthcare, disaster relief, HIV/AIDS-related charities and wildlife preservation.

She also donated generously to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and contributed to relief efforts following Hurricane Helene.

Her commitment to children was not limited to charitable programmes. Parton and Dean were closely involved in the lives of their nieces and nephews, whom she frequently described as part of her family.

“The older [Carl and I] get, the gladder we are that we don’t have [kids] now, because we take care of a lot of other people’s kids. We buy new cars for all the nieces and nephews that graduate, we send any to college that want to go,” she told Rolling Stone in 2003.

Parton also had a close relationship with singer Miley Cyrus, whom she served as godmother.

“I’ve known her since she was a baby,” Parton said of Cyrus, now 33, in a 2009 interview with ABC News. “I’m so proud of her, love her. And she’s just like one of my own.”

For Parton, not having children of her own became part of a broader life devoted to music, family and service to children and communities. Her legacy therefore extended beyond her decades-long career as one of country music’s most recognisable figures.
