Vice President Shettima Urges Constructive Change Amidst Unrest in Northern Nigeria

Vice President Kashim Shettima has highlighted poor leadership, widespread corruption, and deep-rooted poverty as the primary causes of recent vandalism and looting in northern Nigeria.

During a graduation ceremony for 20 disadvantaged students at Hau’wa Memorial School (HMS), owned by AMA Foundation, Shettima—represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmad—expressed concern over the long-standing acceptance of social vices. He pointed out that this tolerance has fostered a generation that shows little respect for authority or the rule of law, which has contributed to the destruction witnessed during recent nationwide protests against economic hardships.

“We have tolerated poverty, corruption, and poor leadership for too long, and the result is a generation that does not respect God, the law, leadership, or our values,” Shettima said.

The vice president reiterated the federal government’s commitment, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to restoring Nigeria’s prosperity. He emphasized the importance of leaving a positive legacy for future generations, akin to the contributions of past leaders like Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto.

Reflecting on the recent disturbances, Shettima remarked, “The country has faced challenging times in the past two weeks, mainly driven by young people who are angry and hungry, who see no hope for a better future, who feel neglected by the government, and who have lost respect for authority because they feel betrayed.”

He called on young Nigerians to direct their frustration towards reforming the political system, which he described as flawed and producing inadequate leaders. He also urged parents to play a more active role in raising their children, stressing that there is no excuse for theft or looting.

Shettima encouraged the graduating students to focus on hard work and integrity as they shape their futures. “We must work hard for our country and believe that Nigeria can be fixed. If the current politics and system are not producing good leadership, peace, and security, then they need to be changed—but do not abandon the service of the people who rely on you.”

He assured the graduates that the government is dedicated to creating an environment where they can pursue their education and livelihoods without fear.
