“Vampire” Serial Killer Escapes Kenyan Custody with 12 Others in Dramatic Jailbreak

Kenyan authorities are on high alert after Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, a suspected serial killer dubbed “a vampire,” escaped from custody alongside 12 other detainees on Tuesday, September 20. Khalusha, who is accused of murdering 42 women, managed to break free from Nairobi’s Gigiri police station with the alleged assistance of eight police officers, including station commanders.

The breakout was discovered when officers arrived to serve breakfast and found the cells empty. According to Mohamed Amin, head of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the inmates cut through a wire mesh in their cells and scaled the perimeter wall. The situation has raised concerns about internal collusion, as Amin indicated that “the escape was aided by insiders, considering that officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station.”

Following the escape, police conducted a search of Khalusha’s home, where they discovered several cell phones and a machete, adding to the grim profile of the suspect. Khalusha, 33, had been under police custody since July after authorities discovered 10 mutilated bodies in a quarry in Nairobi’s Kware neighborhood. Khalusha allegedly confessed to these murders as well as 32 others, including that of his missing wife, claiming to have killed 42 women over a two-year period.

Described by police as “a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life,” Khalusha was ordered to remain in custody for another week as investigations into the 42 homicides continued. However, the dramatic jailbreak has now placed him back on the streets, raising fears among the public.

Khalusha’s lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, maintains his client’s innocence, stating that Khalusha’s confession was coerced under torture by the police. Ndegwa, who last spoke to Khalusha on Friday, expressed his disbelief over the escape, saying, “I’m also confused by the news.”

Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli announced that the eight officers accused of facilitating the escape are now facing disciplinary action, as authorities intensify their efforts to recapture Khalusha and the other fugitives. The escape has sent shockwaves through Kenya, as the manhunt for one of the country’s most notorious criminal suspects continues.
