The 14-year-old gunman responsible for the deadly mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday, September 4, has been identified as Colt Gray, a student at the school. The attack left two students and two teachers dead, while nine others were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, including a math teacher who suffered a shattered hip. Several victims were airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment.

During the terrifying ordeal, some students texted their parents, expressing their love and fear, while one survivor recounted how Gray banged on their barricaded classroom door, demanding entry before moving on.

The shooting ended when a school resource officer confronted Gray, leading to his immediate surrender. Gray was unharmed and is now facing charges of murder as an adult, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith expressed his sorrow for the victims and their families, but emphasized that “love will prevail” over the tragedy.

Authorities are still investigating Gray’s motives, which appear to have no clear connection to the victims. Gray had been on the FBI’s radar since 2023, following anonymous tips about online threats to carry out violence at an unspecified school. At the time, Gray and his father were interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, but no further action was taken. The GBI is now investigating any potential links between those earlier threats and the shooting.
