The Senate has conducted a closed-door screening of Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the acting Chief of Army Staff, as part of his confirmation process for the substantive position.

According to Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, the screening was held behind closed doors due to security reasons. Yar’adua emphasized the importance of the screening process in ensuring that nominees are thoroughly vetted before confirmation.

The Senate had earlier received a request from the President seeking Oluyede’s confirmation as Chief of Army Staff during their sitting on Tuesday. This move paves the way for Oluyede’s potential confirmation, which is expected to take place shortly.

As the National Assembly is responsible for ensuring peace, order, and good governance, Yar’adua stressed the importance of upholding laws related to national legislation, institutional provisions, and judicial pronouncements. He emphasized the critical role of the Parliament in promoting the country’s well-being.

The goal of security sector governance, according to Yar’adua, is to establish standards that promote both state and human security. This underscores the significance of the Senate’s role in confirming key appointments, such as the Chief of Army Staff.
