Nigerian professional chess player, Tunde Onakoya, has pledged to sponsor the education of an 11-year-old girl who was seen accompanying her mother to her street-sweeping job in an Ikoyi estate.
A video of the mother and daughter recently went viral after activist Adetoun confronted them, accusing the mother of engaging the child in child labor. The footage, recorded at 4:30 AM, showed the young girl assisting her mother in sweeping the estate.
In response to the viral clip, Tunde Onakoya shared his own experience of helping his mother with menial jobs while ensuring others did not find out. He criticized the activist’s approach, condemning the public humiliation of the mother in front of her child and the decision to post the video online for public judgment.
While acknowledging that the child should not be working, Onakoya emphasized that the family needed empathy and support rather than outrage and criticism. As a gesture of kindness, he announced his commitment to sponsoring the girl’s education up to the university level.
