The Bauchi State Ministry of Works and Transport has reiterated its resolve to enhance security at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi (SATBIA), ensuring the protection of infrastructure and surrounding areas. The permanent secretary, Engr. Mohammad Hamisu Garba, gave the assurance during a security and community stakeholders’ meeting held at the airport.

He explained that the move follows Governor Bala Mohammed’s directive to prevent further security breaches at the facility. As part of the plan, seven surveillance officers drawn from neighbouring communities have been deployed to work with airport officials in monitoring activities and reporting suspicious behaviour.

Hamisu pointed to the successful departure of the 2025 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia as proof of the airport’s operational capabilities and readiness. He also reiterated that farming and grazing within airport boundaries remain prohibited for safety reasons.

Traditional leaders were urged to assist in raising awareness and rallying local support to protect airport infrastructure. The airport’s general manager, Surveyor Babagana Muhammad Tata, noted recent sabotage incidents and called for a complete review of the current security setup. He stressed the importance of community involvement in securing the facility, adding, “This airport is a shared asset — the commitment of surrounding communities is essential.”

Malam Sale Garba, Hamlet Head of Durum Fulani and representative of the Ward Head of Durum, expressed appreciation for the inclusion of local youths in the surveillance initiative, pledging the community’s active cooperation.
