The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, announced on Monday that eight staff members—four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants—are currently under investigation for alleged negligence in the treatment of accident victims.Speaking at a press briefing, the hospital stated that any personnel found guilty of dereliction of duty will face appropriate consequences. The Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, addressed the issue, which stems from a viral video that sparked public outrage after appearing on social media.
The footage showed victims of a road accident reportedly left unattended at the hospital’s Emergency Unit. The video, shared by a good Samaritan who claimed to have transported the injured to the hospital, alleged that staff refused to provide immediate care, with one citing a lack of gloves as a reason.
Dr. Muftau confirmed that the victims seen in the video have since received treatment. The individual with a head injury—whose condition prompted the most concern—was stabilised and discharged on the same day he arrived at the facility.
He added that the investigation, ordered by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, is ongoing and its findings will be made public once concluded.“All the staff who were present on that particular day are going to be investigated,” Muftau said. “They are up to eight—nurses, attendants, doctors. For now, they are four doctors, two nurses, and two health assistants.”
He also dismissed claims that the hospital was overwhelmed at the time of the incident. According to him, the facility is sufficiently staffed to handle emergencies. “In terms of being overwhelmed, this hospital is blessed with a lot of staff,” he said. “As I speak with you, we have over 100 consultants in various specialties. In neurosurgery alone, the sole specialty of surgery, we have three.” The hospital’s management reiterated its commitment to upholding professional standards and ensuring accountability in patient care.
