A Chinese politician has been handed a suspended death sentence over a \$37.8 million bribery scandal. Wang Yong, former vice-chairman of the Xizang autonomous region government, was sentenced by the Chenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Hunan province. He received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes, alongside a lifetime deprivation of political rights and confiscation of all personal assets. His illicit gains and related proceeds will be turned over to the state treasury.

According to the court, between 2007 and 2023, Wang exploited his positions—including roles within the Civil Aviation Administration of China Southwest Regional Administration, the Civil Aviation Safety Supervision Bureau of Guizhou province, and Guizhou Airport Group—to grant favours in project contracts and other areas. In return, he accepted bribes totaling over 271 million yuan (\$37.8 million).

The court described the offenses as extremely serious, with massive bribes and significant damage to public property and national interests. However, Wang’s confession, guilty plea, remorse, and efforts to return the illicit funds—which have been fully recovered—contributed to a more lenient sentence.

His trial, held publicly on May 15, was attended by over 40 people. He admitted guilt and delivered a final statement in court. In China, a suspended death sentence is typically commuted to life imprisonment after two years if the convict commits no further crimes, and the term may be reduced further based on good behavior.
