Fifteen years after his death, the legacy of Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun, widely known as Dagrin, remains deeply etched in Nigerian music history. The Recording Academy, organisers of the GRAMMY Awards, has included his breakout track “Pon Pon Pon” among the top ten songs shaping the global evolution of Afrobeats. Notably, it is the only rap song on the list, reaffirming its impact as a groundbreaking moment in Nigerian music. Released in 2009, “Pon Pon Pon” was more than just a hit—it redefined the space for indigenous rap by showcasing gritty street narratives and raw Yoruba lyricism.

At a time when the industry leaned heavily toward pop and Western influences, Dagrin shifted the focus to authentic local storytelling. The song vividly reflected the rhythm and complexity of Lagos life and became a template for future artists in both Afrobeats and Nigerian hip-hop. Behind the scenes, the preservation of Dagrin’s legacy has involved significant work. Digital Music Commerce and Exchange Limited (DMCE), a rights management and music licensing company, has led this effort. Under General Manager Ezekiel Olayinka, DMCE took legal steps, including obtaining a letter of administration from the Lagos State Probate Registry, to secure ownership and protect Dagrin’s intellectual property from years of mismanagement.

In collaboration with Dagrin’s family, DMCE reclaimed his catalog, eliminated unauthorized uses, and established a foundation for the rapper’s posthumous legacy. This culminated in a major deal with Sony Music Publishing Nigeria, reconnecting Dagrin’s music to the global scene.

In August 2024, Sony hosted the “Legend Sampling Camp,” an event that brought top producers and artists together to reinterpret the works of Nigerian icons. Dagrin’s music was featured alongside those of Fuji legends like K1 De Ultimate, King Dr. Saheed Osupa, and the late Chief Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister. All these estates are managed by DMCE, highlighting a wider mission to preserve indigenous Nigerian music.

While the Recording Academy’s recognition places Dagrin on a global pedestal, it is the ongoing efforts of DMCE and his family that keep his influence alive. Their work ensures that “Pon Pon Pon” continues to inspire, stream, and be sampled—solidifying Dagrin’s role as the architect of Afro-Street Rap and a lasting voice in Nigeria’s musical heartbeat.
