Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday for civil servants in celebration of Isese Day.The announcement was contained in a circular signed by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, on Monday, August 18, and distributed to ministries, agencies, local councils, and parastatals.

Isese, a Yoruba term meaning “tradition” or “ancestral heritage,” is commonly used to describe indigenous Yoruba religion, cultural practices, and values passed down through generations. According to the circular, the holiday reflects the government’s commitment to promoting Yoruba culture, preserving heritage, and supporting traditional institutions across the state.

Work for public servants will resume on Thursday, August 21, at 8:00 a.m.The circular read in part: “In reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition and preserving our heritage, while providing necessary support for traditional Institutions in the State, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025, as Work Free Day for Lagos State Public Servants in commemoration of the Day.”

Isese Day, which celebrates Yoruba spirituality and cultural identity, has in recent years gained official recognition in Lagos and other southwestern states, underlining growing efforts to preserve indigenous traditions and promote inclusivity.
