Mofe Duncan slams Daddy Freeze for remarks about Alex Ekubo

Actor Mofe Duncan has publicly criticised media personality Daddy Freeze over comments he made regarding the service of songs held in honour of late actor Alex Ekubo. Daddy Freeze had questioned the nature of the event, particularly the musical performances by gospel artistes, including Mercy Chinwo, suggesting that the tribute resembled a concert rather than a traditional memorial gathering.

Responding in a lengthy Instagram post, Duncan stressed that the event was organised to celebrate and honour Alex Ekubo’s life, not to satisfy the personal preferences of attendees. He described Daddy Freeze’s remarks as inappropriate and said he felt compelled to address them despite usually avoiding public disputes. The actor clarified that the gathering was a night of tributes and a service of songs rather than a funeral ceremony. He noted that hymns were performed during the programme and recalled being emotionally moved by one of the renditions.

Duncan also defended the worship-focused nature of the event, explaining that several members of Ekubo’s inner circle had repeatedly highlighted the late actor’s love for worship music. According to him, the style of the ceremony reflected the kind of celebration Ekubo himself would have appreciated. He further pointed out that Daddy Freeze did not follow the event’s all-white dress code, attending in black instead. While acknowledging that there could have been personal reasons for the choice, Duncan argued that it was inconsistent to criticise the event while disregarding its guidelines.

The actor also took issue with Daddy Freeze’s decision to publicly announce that he left the event upset, saying such comments shifted attention away from the purpose of the gathering and the memory of the late actor. Duncan concluded by urging greater sensitivity when commenting on memorial events, maintaining that the tribute should have remained focused on celebrating Alex Ekubo’s life and legacy rather than becoming a subject of public criticism.
