Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has proposed a nationwide lockdown as a drastic measure to address the country’s worsening security crisis. Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Buratai argued that just as the COVID-19 lockdown mobilized resources and citizens to confront a health emergency, a similar approach could help flush out terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers.

“We can lock down this country to make sure everybody concentrates and deals with this cankerworm called terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and so on,” he said. Buratai, who served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Benin Republic after leaving office, recalled warning that insurgency would last longer than many anticipated, stressing the need for long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes.

Citing the Maiduguri flood relief efforts as an example, he emphasized the importance of national unity and collective action. According to him, the fight against insecurity should not be left to the military alone but should involve citizens, the media, and civil society. His comments come amid rising insecurity across the country, with growing calls for more decisive government action against banditry and terrorism.
