The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the suspended Port Harcourt–Aba train services will resume on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.The services were halted after the train broke down at Imo River on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at about 4:22 pm.

According to a statement signed by the District Public Relations Officer, Eastern District, Dr. Onyedikachi S. Onovo, the train, which was en route from Aba to Port Harcourt, developed a sudden fault and stopped functioning. Despite efforts by engineers to fix the problem, the locomotive could not be revived. An alternative engine, Loco 2306, was then deployed to rescue the stranded train.

While some passengers opted for alternative means to reach their destinations, others were conveyed back safely. The affected train was later returned to Port Harcourt for thorough repairs to ensure it meets enhanced quality control before resuming service.

The NRC has advised passengers affected by the disruption to visit its stations in Port Harcourt or Aba with proof of payment for either a refund or a replacement train ride. Reassuring the public, the NRC said it remains committed to transforming the corporation under the Renewed Hope Agenda and rail revitalisation programme, aimed at delivering safer, more reliable, and customer-friendly rail services nationwide. The corporation also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers during the disruption.
