Heavy traffic brought the Kugbo–Nyanya Expressway to a halt on Monday morning as the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest disrupted movement into the Federal Capital Territory.

The demonstration, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, began around 7 a.m. near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, with protesters demanding the release of Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021 on terrorism-related charges.

According to NTA News, the gridlock was worsened by parked vehicles and large crowds along the Abuja–Keffi highway, causing a complete standstill on a major route used daily by thousands of commuters. The station noted that the corridor has a history of heavy congestion during protests and security operations.

As the situation intensified, some motorists abandoned their vehicles, while many commuters—especially civil servants and private sector workers—trekked long distances from Nyanya, Mararaba, and Karu to reach the city centre.
