The Osun State Government has appointed Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund, in a bid to raise sustainable financing for the state’s sports sector.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to completing the ongoing rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, adding that the upgraded arena will meet Olympic standards when finished.
According to the Guardian Nigeria, the appointment was confirmed by the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, who also serves as the Commissioner for Sports. He said Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration is determined to transform the stadium into a world-class facility capable of hosting national and international competitions.
“Ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium to meet Olympic standards — a project that will be completed in the shortest possible time,” Adewusi said. He disclosed that plans are at an advanced stage to establish the Osun State Sports Commission, which will centralise sports administration, development and policy implementation in the state. As part of the new framework, the government is introducing a Sports Trust Fund to attract private-sector support and philanthropic contributions.
“Davido has been appointed to chair the Sports Trust Fund, and he did not hesitate in accepting the appointment. His intervention would attract funds that would impact Osun sports positively,” Adewusi stated.
