AbdulGaniyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has officially assumed office as the substantive chairman of Agege Local Government following the resignation of the former chairman, Tunde Azeez, popularly known as Disco.
The Agege Local Government legislative council confirmed AbdulGaniyu’s elevation from vice chairman to acting chairman during its plenary session on Wednesday, after unanimously accepting Azeez’s resignation due to health-related challenges that had hindered his performance in office.
Lawmakers commended Azeez for his dedication and contributions to the development of the community, wishing him a full recovery. Azeez, who was sworn in on July 26, 2025, had taken medical leave barely a month after assuming office. With his resignation, the council legislators resolved to install AbdulGaniyu Obasa as acting chairman to ensure leadership continuity, stability, and effective service delivery to residents of Agege.
Before the July 12, 2025, local government elections, concerns had been raised over alleged imposition of candidates in Agege. The Concern Group Initiative (CGI), a civil society organisation, had urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to ensure a transparent and credible primary process. Reports at the time indicated that AbdulGaniyu, initially endorsed as the party’s chairmanship candidate, later stepped down amid public criticism and agreed to serve as Azeez’s running mate — a decision that has now paved the way for his emergence as council chairman following Azeez’s exit.
