Macclesfield footballer Ethan McLeod has died at the age of 21 following a road traffic accident on the M1.The forward, who came through the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy, was returning from Bedford Town after Macclesfield’s 2-1 victory on Tuesday night when the crash occurred around 10:40 pm near junction 15 for Northampton.
McLeod’s white Mercedes struck a nearside metal barrier, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident led to an overnight closure of the M1, with the road reopening around 7:30 am. Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage or additional information to come forward. Macclesfield paid tribute to McLeod in a statement on Wednesday afternoon, describing him as “an incredibly talented and well-respected member of our First Team Squad, who had his whole life ahead of him.” The club added that his “infectious personality endeared him to everyone he came into contact with” and that his professionalism and work ethic inspired teammates both on and off the pitch.
“Ethan’s passing has left our entire club in total shock,” the statement said. “The deep mental scars from his loss will never heal, but Ethan’s vibrant legacy will live on. He will remain in our hearts and minds forever, and his unique smile will never be forgotten. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends, and we will provide as much support as we can to those who need it. May you rest in peace, Ethan – you will forever be a Silkman.”
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand also paid tribute on X, writing, “Sending love to Ethan’s family and friends.” McLeod spent ten years at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy and had spells at Alvechurch FC, Rushall Olympic, and Stourbridge before signing for National League North side Macclesfield in July.
