Super Eagles Remain Only AFCON Team Without Official Fans at Morocco Tournament

The Nigerian Super Eagles have reportedly become the only team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco without officially organised travelling supporters, a situation that has raised concern among football stakeholders and fans. As the tournament unfolds, colourful and energetic supporter groups from across the continent have been visible in stadiums and host cities. Nations such as Ghana, Senegal, Egypt and host country Morocco are backed by large, accredited fan groups that travel with their teams and provide constant vocal support.

Nigeria is traditionally known for its passionate football supporters, whose colourful outfits, drums and lively chants have added flair to past AFCON tournaments. However, at the current competition in Morocco, there has been a noticeable absence of officially recognised Nigerian fan groups in the stands supporting the Super Eagles. Football analysts note that the lack of an organised fan presence could have an impact on team morale, particularly during high-pressure matches where crowd support often plays a psychological role. While the Super Eagles have remained focused and professional, visible backing from home supporters is widely regarded as a key source of motivation at continental tournaments.

Sources within supporters’ groups attribute the situation to logistical difficulties, limited funding and weak coordination between fan associations and football authorities. High travel and accommodation costs, along with visa challenges, are also said to have restricted the number of Nigerian fans able to travel to Morocco. Despite the absence of travelling supporters, fans at home have continued to show strong support for the team. Viewing centres across major cities have been filled, watch parties organised, and social media platforms flooded with messages of encouragement and solidarity for the Super Eagles.

As the AFCON tournament progresses, there have been increasing calls for the Nigeria Football Federation, sports administrators and corporate sponsors to put in place a structured system that ensures official fan representation at future competitions. Many believe that organised travelling support is essential to projecting Nigeria’s football identity and presence on the continental stage.
