Embattled Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington has filed a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit against Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun. The lawsuit stems from Darlington’s alleged unlawful detention.According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, Speed Darlington was first illegally detained for five days. During this time, he was subjected to severe torture and maltreatment without being formally charged to a court.

The artiste was detained in Lagos over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking related to his comments about Burna Boy. Speed Darlington’s lawyer claimed that his client’s arrest and detention violated his fundamental rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1832/2024, was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Speed Darlington sued the IGP as the sole respondent in the fundamental rights suit. In the suit, Speed Darlington’s lawyer sought four orders from the court. Firstly, he urged the court to declare that Speed Darlington’s arrest and detention violated his fundamental rights.

Secondly, Adeyanju sought an order directing the IGP to immediately and unconditionally release Speed Darlington from the detention facility. Alternatively, he sought an order mandating the IGP to produce Speed Darlington before the court.

The lawyer also sought an order directing the respondent to pay Speed Darlington the sum of N300 million as general, exemplary, and aggravating damages for his unlawful detention.

Speed Darlington’s lawyer claimed that his client’s detention was a clear violation of his rights, and he sought justice and compensation for the harm inflicted.
