The Abia State Government has revealed that subsidised fares for its Electric Bus Service will commence on 1 March 2026, as part of measures to reduce transportation expenses and upgrade the state’s public transport network.Governor Alex Otti made this known on Friday night during the February edition of his monthly media engagement, “Governor Otti Speaks.”

Under the new pricing structure, commuters will pay between N800 and N1,000 to use the electric buses. It will be recalled that when the service was introduced in December 2025, residents enjoyed free rides across designated routes as part of the initial rollout and public familiarisation phase.Governor Otti explained that passengers travelling from Umuahia to Aba will be charged N800, while those going from Umuahia to Ohafia will pay N1,000.

He also announced that the Electric Bus System will adopt a fully digital payment system, requiring commuters to pay with their ATM cards. According to him, this approach is intended to strengthen transparency and accountability in the scheme. The state government noted that the initiative is designed to lessen the financial strain on residents while encouraging a modern, transparent and eco-friendly transport system.

During the session, Governor Otti outlined achievements recorded by his administration in key areas such as healthcare, infrastructure, power supply, security and economic growth, reaffirming his commitment to repositioning the state. He recalled that shortly after taking office, his administration declared a state of emergency in critical sectors to fast-track development, adding that significant progress has since been achieved. The governor stressed that the ongoing reforms across various sectors reflect his administration’s determination to improve governance and service delivery throughout the state.
