Iran has cautioned Donald Trump to “be careful not to be eliminated” following his comments questioning whether the country’s new Supreme Leader could “live in peace.” Trump had previously threatened Iran with “death, fire, and fury” over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and criticized the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the nation’s new Supreme Leader. He told Fox News that he was “not happy with the appointment” and insisted he would have the final say over Iran’s leadership.
Responding, Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani dismissed Trump’s remarks, saying Iran “is not afraid of your empty threats” and adding, “Even those greater than you could not eliminate the Iranian nation. Take care of yourself not to be eliminated!” The warning comes shortly after an Iranian operative was convicted for plotting to assassinate Trump during the 2024 presidential election.
Asif Merchant, a Pakistani national trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was found guilty of the assassination attempt on Saturday. National security officials had previously alerted Trump’s campaign that Iran had multiple kill teams operating within the United States.
