Ride-hailing giant Uber has announced it will shut down its operations in Nigeria, bringing an end to its 12-year presence in the country’s transport sector. The decision has left many riders and drivers wondering what comes next. Uber said it will wind down its Nigerian operations effective September 2, 2026. The company, which launched in Lagos in 2014 before expanding to other cities, said the decision followed a thorough review of its business.
Although Uber confirmed its exit, it did not disclose the specific reasons behind the decision. In its statement, the company simply said it had reviewed its business before deciding to cease operations in Nigeria. The announcement came as Uber unveiled a global restructuring that includes cutting about 3,300 jobs, representing roughly 10 per cent of its workforce. Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi said the company is simplifying its organisational structure to improve efficiency and focus on long-term growth.
Once operations end, drivers will no longer be able to receive trip requests through the Uber app in Nigeria. Passengers who rely on the platform will also need to use alternative ride-hailing services for their daily transportation. Several ride-hailing platforms continue to operate in Nigeria, including Bolt, inDrive, LagRide and Rida. Industry observers expect these companies to compete for Uber’s former drivers and customers.
Uber’s departure marks one of the biggest developments in Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry in recent years. While the company has not explained why it is leaving, the move is expected to reshape competition in the sector as rival operators seek to expand their market share and attract displaced users.
