Music artist Naira Marley testified virtually on Friday before Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi at the Ikorodu Magistrate Court in the ongoing Coroner’s inquest into the death of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. During his testimony, Marley confirmed that Mohbad was signed to his record label, Marlian Records, under a four-album contract.

However, he stated that the albums were never completed due to ongoing disagreements between Mohbad and his manager, Opere Babatunde. Denying allegations of threats or harassment, Marley referenced a police report that cleared him of any wrongdoing, dismissing the accusations as baseless. He also addressed a viral video in which Mohbad claimed Marley and his team should be held responsible if anything happened to him.

According to Marley, Mohbad and his parents later apologized, attributing the statement to the late singer being under the influence of drugs. Marley insisted there was no conflict between him and Mohbad, adding that he had not seen the singer for over a year before his passing and was out of the country when he died. However, Mohbad’s lawyer, Oluwasanmi Falade, disputed Marley’s claims, asserting that there was an unresolved dispute between the singer and Marlian Records over unpaid royalties.

Falade testified that, at Mohbad’s request, he had sent multiple letters demanding the payment of royalties, none of which received a response. He also mentioned an attack on Mohbad at Lekki Beach, allegedly orchestrated by music promoter Sam Larry, which led to police intervention. Following the testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi summoned Sam Larry to appear at the next hearing on April 11.

The Coroner also issued witness summons for Mohbad’s driver and directed the pathologist who conducted the independent autopsy to submit his report to both the court and the Chief Coroner. Speaking to journalists, Wahab Shittu (SAN), counsel to Mohbad’s family, stated that no direct evidence had yet linked Naira Marley to the singer’s death. However, he stressed the importance of the inquest in uncovering the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s passing.

Shittu also revealed that he had requested the Coroner to summon doctors from the two hospitals where Mohbad was treated on the day of his death, as their testimonies could provide critical insights into his condition before he passed away. Witness summons for them are expected to be issued soon.
