South Sudan Lifts Restrictions on Social Media Platforms Facebook and TikTok

The government of South Sudan has lifted its temporary ban on Facebook and TikTok. The suspension was imposed last week following the circulation of disturbing videos showing alleged killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan.

A letter from the National Communications Authority to telecommunications and internet providers confirmed the lifting of the suspension. The authority stated that the graphic images, which sparked violent protests and retaliatory killings across the country, have been removed from the social media platforms.

According to Napoleon Adok Gai, director of the National Communications Authority, the recent violence linked to social media content in South Sudan highlights the need for a balanced approach. This approach should address the root causes of online incitement while protecting the rights of the population.

Rights groups have condemned the Sudanese army and its allies for ethnically-targeted attacks on civilians in Sudan’s El Gezira state. The attacks occurred earlier this month after the army captured the state capital Wad Madani from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The Sudanese army has denounced what it described as individual violations, which were captured on video and widely shared on social media.
