The Nollywood industry is in mourning following the passing of veteran actress Nkechi Nweje, who died at the age of 60 after a brief illness. The sad news was confirmed on Saturday by film producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, via his Instagram page. Expressing his shock, Stanley admitted he struggled to process the news, describing it as feeling like a “dream.”
In a heartfelt tribute, he referred to Nweje as a vibrant actress, his “best friend and mentor.” He recalled their last conversation during the “Queenth saga,” where she advised him to stop engaging in the issue. “I am still speechless,” he concluded. Stanley later shared more details about her life, career, and the illness that led to her passing. “Nkechi Winnie Angel Nweje was from Onicha Ado in Onitsha, Anambra State. A devoted Christian, she was a wife to Dr. Azubuike Nweje and a loving mother of six. Born on June 6, 1964, she gained fame for her role in the movie *Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha*,” he wrote.
He further revealed that Nweje hailed from a wealthy and culturally significant family and was a graduate. According to family sources, she passed away due to complications from a major stomach surgery she underwent in November 2024. Although she had been recovering, her condition suddenly worsened, and she succumbed to the illness. The Nollywood community continues to mourn her loss, remembering her contributions to the industry and the legacy she leaves behind.
