IGP Egbetokun Reorganises Police Mobile Force to Boost Security, Withdraws Personnel from Non-Core Assignments. Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a comprehensive reorganisation of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) aimed at strengthening internal security and restoring the unit to its core operational mandate.
The directive was given during a meeting with PMF Squadron Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday. Force spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi shared details of the announcement in a statement on X, where the IGP stressed the need to refocus the PMF in line with its original function as the elite tactical unit of the Nigeria Police Force, created to swiftly respond to emergencies, riots, and violent threats.
Egbetokun expressed concern over the increasing diversion of PMF personnel to roles outside their primary function, particularly escort and guard services for private citizens and VIPs—a development he said had weakened the unit’s operational impact. To address the issue, the IGP announced immediate measures, including the withdrawal of PMF officers from unauthorised duties, regular ethics and professionalism training every quarter, and ensuring combat-ready units remain on standby across all squadrons for swift tactical deployment.
He also warned that commanders would be held accountable for the performance and conduct of their personnel, urging them to embrace proactive leadership, regular inspections, and mentoring to uphold discipline and human rights standards. The statement emphasised the police leadership’s commitment to repositioning the PMF as a reliable tactical force and highlighted upcoming reforms, including leadership training and capacity-building programs designed to meet modern security demands and align with international best practices.
Egbetokun thanked President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing support and acknowledged contributions from international partners in strengthening the Force’s technical and training capabilities. He called on all PMF Squadron Commanders to take ownership of the reforms as both a professional obligation and a moral duty, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to protect lives, property, and national stability.
