Ahead of the 2025 Eid-El-Kabir celebrations, security agencies in Kano State have reaffirmed that the ban on all Sallah Durbar activities remains firmly in place. In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, the joint security forces emphasized their readiness to enforce the ban strictly. The directive, originally imposed during the 2025 Eid-El-Fitr celebrations, was based on credible intelligence warning of potential threats to public order linked to planned Durbar processions.
“The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies in the State, congratulates Muslim faithful and all law-abiding residents of the State ahead of the 2025 Eid-El-Kabir Sallah festivities,” the statement read. “To ensure peaceful celebrations, worshippers are urged to remain law-abiding, as robust security measures have been put in place across the state.”
Authorities cited ongoing security threats as the reason for sustaining the prohibition. Intelligence reports suggest that certain individuals may attempt to hijack Durbar activities to incite unrest, similar to concerns raised during the previous Sallah festival. Key security directives issued include:
- A total ban on horse or animal riding (Kilisa)
- Prohibition of car racing and reckless driving
- Ban on the unlawful possession or display of firearms and weapons
- Strict warning against carrying suspicious or dangerous items
The statement further warned parents to prevent their children and wards from being recruited by “subversive elements,” noting that any infractions would be met with full legal consequences. Despite the official ban, preparations by the Kano Emirate Council suggest a potential standoff. The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, reportedly directed District Heads to proceed to the city with their village heads, traditional horse riders, and ceremonial outfits in anticipation of Durbar celebrations.
A circular signed by the Secretary of the Kano Emirate Council, Abba Yusuf, instructed all relevant officials to prepare for the event, setting up a potential clash between traditional customs and security directives. Authorities, however, maintain that public peace and safety take precedence. The police urged residents to comply fully with the restrictions to ensure a hitch-free Eid celebration.
