
St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, has claimed top honours at the first-ever UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, outperforming both Nigerian and British schools to emerge as the grand champion.
The virtual event, held on June 19, 2025, brought together high-performing secondary schools from both countries in a contest of ideas, argumentation, and public speaking skill.
Nigeria was represented by four schools: Britarch Schools, Abuja; Sure Start School, Abuja; St. Augustine’s College, Jos; and St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu. The United Kingdom fielded Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.
After rigorous preliminary rounds, St. John Vianney advanced to the finals, having defeated strong British opponents including Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School. In an all-Nigerian final match-up, they faced St. Augustine’s College, Jos.
Displaying confidence, clarity, and persuasive skill, the Ukwulu-based team secured a commanding victory in the final round, earning the distinguished title of Inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Champions.
