Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has risen to 8th in the latest FIBA Women’s World Rankings after their record-breaking run at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan.

The standings, released on Thursday, 14 August, show Nigeria climbing from 11th to 8th with 640.1 ranking points. They remain the only African side ever to break into the global top 10. The United States stays in first place with 880.9 points, ahead of Australia (719.6) and France (719.2). China (712.7) and Belgium (702.1) complete the top five, followed by Spain, Canada, and Nigeria.

The jump follows D’Tigress’ historic achievement of winning a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title — the first time any African men’s or women’s team has done so. They secured a 78–64 victory over Senegal in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, claiming their seventh AfroBasket championship and extending their unbeaten run in the competition to 29 games since 2015.

Lithuania, returning to the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket after a decade and reaching the quarter-finals, moved up 14 places to 31st. South Sudan impressed on their AfroBasket Women debut with a third-place finish. Lebanon rose 13 spots to 41st, Indonesia climbed 19 places to 60th after the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2025, Iran gained 15 positions to 44th, and Mongolia jumped 20 places to 70th following their performance in Division B of the same tournament.
